FIRE RELIEF FUND

Months have passed since the Soberanes Fire changed forever the lives of many in our community. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to those who have lost everything – homes in which memories were made, neighborhoods, livelihoods, farms, art studios, businesses – cultivated over a lifetime burned to the ground.

During such trying times, it’s easy to feel defeated by so much loss, but we’ve been inspired by our friends and neighbors who are pitching in to raise Monterey from the ashes. We, the Monterey County Vacation Rental Alliance, have been called to help by supporting individuals and organizations committed to the recovery of our community. The families who share their homes in Monterey County have stepped up and dedicated funds to rebuilding. Owners and property managers have reached out to former vacation rental guests and those guests – devastated to discover that the place they love so deeply to visit has been rocked by disaster – have shown up and donated funds to relief efforts. MCVRA has already raised $25,000 and delivered those funds to Coast Property Owners Association, Mid Coast Fire Brigade, Big Sur Fire Brigade, Christian Aid Ministries, American Red Cross, SPCA for Monterey County, Robert Reagan Bereavement Fund, and directly to several families who experienced total loss without insurance nor resources to rebuild. And even while the fire raged, and then finally stopped, owners of vacations rentals have been donating housing to families who were displaced.

We call on others in the community to dig deep and think creatively to bring some cheer and comfort into the lives of those directly affected by this most expensive fire in U.S. history with 140 structures (among them 57 homes) destroyed and approximately 18 renters’ homes burned to the ground. We’re rebuilding and will be stronger as a community when we all work together!
